Our Story

Hi and welcome!

I’m Dana Mittelman, calligrapher and lettering artist and owner of The Pink Quill.

When I tell people I am a calligrapher I often get blank looks followed by questions asking what that means I actually do! So, while I’m here, let me just say that Calligraphy and lettering is a wide and varied art form that includes traditional lettering like the kind you find in medieval manuscripts to modern, bouncy and free style lettering that you will often find on greeting cards. I do all sorts of commissions; ketubahs, gifts, event stationery, wall art as well as running classes and workshops. Have a look on this site or on my instagram for lots of lettering inspiration!

A little bit about my background…

I have always had an interest in art and asthetics but was particularly drawn to the traditional art of calligraphy. I love the order, flow and luscious look of ink on a piece of thick, quality paper. I remember even as a young child, taking an exceptionally long time writing up my lessons in school, making sure my lettering was beautifully constructed and I remember some exasperated teachers as well!

I orginally studied Banking and International Finance at Cass Business School, City University and plans were to go into the field of private banking. However, life happened in the meantime and I got married to my wonderful husband and my lovely daughter was born just after completing my studies. I made the decision to stay home to look after my family and I became more interested in calligraphy while being at home.

I ended up attending the University of Sunderland to do a BA in Calligraphy with Design, a course supported by The Prince’s Trust and held at Kensington Palace. I still feel very fortunate to have studied under the most renowned calligraphers who opened up a giant calligraphy world for me with endless possibilities.

Since my time at Kensington Palace, I have taken on various calligraphy and lettering jobs from the usual gift commissions to the more exotic requests. Some memorable commissions were a written marriage proposal, an inscription on an ostrich egg and a handwritten dedication to the king of Bahrain!

The Pink Quill was born during the first lockdown when I decided that the time was right to put all my energy into doing what I love most. I am able to offer services in fine lettering for ketubah writing and design, invitations and place cards, gift commissions and if you would like to get your friends together for some classy crafting, I offer bespoke private workshops as well.

I am delighted to bring you the services of The Pink Quill and look forward to speaking to you about your custom project!
